Quest for a Rug…

I’m looking for a new kitchen rug.  Well, two actually…  The ones I have now are of the fabulous Target brand, and although they have been great for nearly 3 years it’s time for a change!  I’m thinking color, bright, fun, and kind of contemporary.

The problem?  I can’t find that anywhere!!  Why is it that all cute rugs come in living room (10′x12′) size?  So frustrating…  Here are a few examples of what I don’t want:

No offence to these lovely kitchen rugs… I just can’t seem to find anything but these rugs!  Where are the cute, young, fun, bright rugs??  Something like this (only kitchen sized):

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I would love to hear them!  Until then, I will continue my quest for the perfect kitchen rug.  Happy Wednesday! :)

My Love.

Happy Anniversary my love!

As of today we have been married 3 years.  Wow, time has flown by!  It honestly seems like just last week we were freshly home from our honeymoon and moving all of our stuff into our house for the first time.  I remember that we couldn’t believe how much stuff we had for two recent college grads… unfortunately 3 years later, I’m pretty sure we have even more stuff :)

Luckily we also have more memories, cherished moments, and crazy stories to go along with the stuff…  I can honestly say that I love you more now than I ever have before.  I love that you know me completely, accept the good and the bad, and love me for who I truly am.  I love that you work so hard for us, keeping our home beautiful and always helping me with any housework chores that I complain about.  I love that you love our cats every bit as much as I do.  I love the honest and sincere way you pour out your heart when we pray together.  I love that you offer to give me back messages and foot rubs when I’m tired and stressed.  I love that you make me get up and go running even when I’m trying to be lazy and sleep in longer than I should.  I love that you challenge me to be the best I can be, and that you are my partner in anything I set out to do.  I love that you can cook (seriously, you make the best fajitas I’ve ever had!)  I love that when we make mistakes you can find the humor in them, and it turns into a great memory.  I love that you plan to travel the world with me, even if you’re perfectly content on a lake somewhere.  And finally I love that I have an entire lifetime ahead of me to fall in love with you even more.

Forever yours,

Marriage Monday

So, I have decided that I would like to do a weekly post about marriage.  I think when every young couple gets married they honestly think it will last a lifetime.  Even though the divorce rate in the United States is now somewhere around 50%, we all assume that we will somehow be immune to it, and that “it won’t happen to us”.  When in fact, the statistics say that if you & your spouse go out to dinner with your favorite couple, one couple will ultimately end up divorced.

These statistics break my heart, and Dwyatt and I are very much aware of them.  We have devoted ourselves to continuing to keep our marriage strong… we want to outlast any statistic!!  So, being that we are a young married couple, I thought it might be appropriate to write about marriage on this blog… thus we are starting Marriage Monday’s!  :)  My thought is that once a week we can discuss different ideas to keep marriages strong, little tips to show your spouse how much you love them, and maybe one day even get advice from some “older & wiser” readers!

When we were engaged we went to pre-marital counseling with our pastor.  One of the goals of this was to make sure we had thought through our decision to marry, and to challenge some of the topics we may not have discussed as a couple.  Our pastor asked us to read The 5 Love Languages, a book by Gary Chapman.  The reason I mention this book 3 years later is because Dwyatt and I still talk about it!  He will occasionally ask me out of nowhere, “how is your love tank today?” or “is the love tank full?”.  Although it sounds like a silly question, I think it’s important that we continue to openly discuss our happiness in our marriage.

The ”love tank” is basically a measure of how happy you are with your marriage on a daily basis.  People tend to be one of the five love languages, meaning that they express and feel loved in one of the following ways:

1) Words of Affirmation – giving compliments and voicing the words “I love you” often.

2) Quality Time – undivided attention without distractions where you focus on a listen to your spouse.

3) Receiving Gifts – nothing big, just a handwritten note or a flower go a long way.

4) Acts of Service – helping your spouse with things like chores, cooking, laundry, etc. without them having to ask.

5) Physical Touch - holding hands, give them a message, hugs, are all forms of physical touch.

I am definitely a Quality Time girl, and Dwyatt is a Acts of Service kind of guy (take this quiz to discover your love language!).  I think this is why Dwyatt & I both enjoy cooking together in the evenings.  He appreciates that I am trying to make him nice dinners and likes to share this chore with me, while I enjoy the casual conversation and undivided attention we give to one another during this time.

What’s your love language?  How about your spouse?  How do you use these to demonstrate how much you love them??

Because I like pictures… here’s one I snapped with my iPhone at the pool earlier this summer :)

Evan Visits!

Two weeks ago my little brother came to visit us.  He is actually a senior this year at Colorado School of Mines, studying Petroleum Engineering (same as Dwyatt!) so he’s not exactly little… but he is to me :)

He just returned from a semester of study in Adelaide Australia, so it was so great to have him home and spend time with him.  Actually I put him to work!  He and Dwyatt made major progress on the pergola (another post on this later…).  They dug 6 post holes, cemented in posts, and then bolted beams to all of them.  Me?  I just stained everything!  Unfortunately it was oil based stain so I have a few t-shirts that are now beyond repair, but the pergola looks amazing so it was worth it!

On Saturday we spent a day on the lake.  Evan hadn’t seen our boat yet, so it was fun to catch some rays, teach him to wakeboard, and partake an a few refreshing adult beverages :)

Sunday we drove down old Route 66, stopping at Pop’s for some awesome burgers & all the soda you could ever possibly want!  Then we wandered through the eastern side of Edmond, up to the Lazy E arena where they were having a team roping event.  What a great weekend… spending time with family is one of my favorite things!

It’s HOT!!!

weather.com Oklahoma Weather forecast

It has been hot in Oklahoma this summer.  Like record-setting hot.  Today will be our 52nd day of 100+ degree weather since June.  Everyone says this is the hottest summer we have had in 30 years.  It hasn’t been too unbearable as long as you’re close to a pool, margarita in hand, and you completely give up hope on your yard…  At one point the highs were up above 110 for almost a week.  On a positive note, when it cools down to the mid 90′s, it’s noticeably “cool”.

This weekend, in order to escape the heat, and to celebrate our 3 year anniversary, Dwyatt and I are headed to Branson, Missouri this afternoon!  It’s only suppose to be about 90 degrees there :)

I’ll have an update for you when we get back!

Back to School…

It’s that time of year… tonight Dwyatt and I start school again.  We are working towards our MBA, attending OU part-time, and this will be the start of year 2 in our 3 year program.  Our classes for this first module consist of Corporate Finance, and Supply Chain Management.  Hmm…

I’m not exactly how I feel about this.  Part of me is dreading giving up two evenings a week, knowing I won’t get home until long after dark.  However, the nerdy part of me is SO excited!  I even bought a few new school supplies!  Binders, notepads, pens, and my favorite “school supply” an iPad 2!  Yes I know… probably not a required thing for school, but it definitely helped me justify buying one!!!  I’m a true Apple addict.

So, I’m hoping that this next school year will fly by, just like last year did… soon enough we’ll be finished!

30 Years & Counting!

Today my parents celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.  Next week Dwyatt and I will celebrate our 3rd anniversary, meaning that my parents have been married 10 times longer than we have.  Whoa!

These days this is a very impressive feat, and I couldn’t be more proud of them!  They are a wonderful example of what love and commitment looks like.  Life is never perfect, but a lifelong marriage can happen.  It fills my heart with joy to know that they are not only still married, but happily married!

Mom & Dad – you are truly an inspiration.  I look forward to building a life with Dwyatt like you two have built together.  Here’s to 30 more years… Congratulations!!!
